First Home Owners Grant

The Queensland Government now offers financial assistance by way of the First Home Owners Grant (FHOG) which is now available for the purchase of granny flats.

For those eligible the grant now stands at $30,000 for contracts signed before June 30th 2025 offering a way forward for both individuals and families entering into multi-generational housing.   The FHOG offers an opportunity for young family members to get into property ownership while significantly adding value to the parent’s property.

Title in the land always remains with the original owner so issues such as the sale of the property, who pays for services (eg. power and water) need to be discussed so both parties have a clear understanding of the relationship to avoid family disputes.

Applicants are required to move into the property within one year and remain in residence for 6 months which provides an option to rent out the property in the longer term.

To qualify, applicants must be:

  • Over the age of 18 years

  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident

  • Not have owned residential property in the past

  • Property value must not exceed $750,000

The grant is only payable upon completion of the granny flat and certification.

The FHOG is not just limited to the purchase of a home in the city so it’s easier for people to stay in country areas close to their families, jobs and community connections.
